BRIGHTON

Brighton is a beach-side suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Bayside. At the 2011 Census, Brighton had a population of 21,257. Brighton is named after Brighton in England.[1]

Education

Secondary schools within Brighton includes Brighton Grammar School, Brighton Secondary College, Firbank Girls' Grammar School, Haileybury's Castlefield campus, St Leonard's College, Xavier College's Kostka Hall junior campus, and Star of the Sea College. The Melbourne International School of Japanese, a part-time Japanese school, previously held its classes at the Brighton Grammar School in Brighton.[2]

Today

Brighton houses some of the wealthiest citizens in Melbourne with grand homes, and the development of large residential blocks of land. On the beach, Beach Road is a popular cycling route, with the Bay Trail off-road walking/cycling tracks also following the coastline.

Dendy Street Beach, just south of Middle Brighton, features 82 colourful bathing boxes, which are one of the tourist icons of Melbourne. The boxes share a uniformity of size and build, and a regular arrangement along the beach, and are the only surviving such structures close to the Melbourne CBD. A Planning Scheme Heritage Overlay on the boxes by the Bayside City Council restricts alterations, and all retain their Victorian era architecture, such as timber frames, weatherboard sidings, and corrugated iron roofs, without amenities such electricity or running water.[3]

Brilliant Schools

Some of the best high schools are in the area, namely:

Brighton Grammer School

Brighton Grammar School is an independent, Anglican, day school for boys, located in Brighton, a south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1882 by Dr George Henry Crowther, Brighton Grammar has a non-selective enrolment policy and currently caters for approximately 1,220 students from the Early Learning Centre (ELC) to Year 12. The majority of students are drawn from the City of Bayside and surrounding suburbs of Brighton, East Brighton, Elsternwick, Hampton, Sandringham, Beaumaris and Black Rock.

The school is affiliated with a number of associations including the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, the Junior School Heads Association of Australia (JSHAA), the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), the Australian Anglican Schools Network, and the Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS).[4]

Brighton Secondary College

Established in 1955, they are a co-educational, government secondary college catering for over 1200 students from Years 7 – 12, with a proud history of serving their local Bay side community.

They are committed to providing inclusive, comprehensive and wide ranging educational opportunities to young people. This is reflected in the diverse range of academic and creative subjects they offer. Their facilities are excellent and include a well-resourced library, drama centre, performing arts centre, careers room, media centre, sports stadium and hockey/tennis field. They also have a state of the art Science, Arts and Technology wing, appropriately named the da Vinci Centre.[5]
