What is Vaastu Shastra?

What is Vaastu Shastra Design?

Vaastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture that believes in aligning buildings with nature to bring good luck and positive energy. It uses the five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air, and space. By placing rooms and objects in specific directions and using certain colours and materials, Vaastu Shastra aims to create harmonious living spaces. Vaastu Shastra can be incorporated in all types of homes, so whether you are building a knockdown rebuild, a modern home, amid a design and build, or a French provincial home, incorporating Vaastu Shastra can make your home feel more aligned with your goals and lifestyle. Let’s explore what Vaastu Shastra is all about and how it can shape your dream home!

The Foundation of Vaastu Shastra

Vaastu Shastra is all about the flow of energy in a home. It focuses on how the five elements of nature—earth, water, fire, air, and space—interact within a house.

Here are the main principles:

  • Vaastu Energy Flow in Homes: Energy, or “prana,” flows throughout a home and can influence how you feel in different spaces. A well-designed home ensures this energy moves freely and supports positive emotions, productivity, and health.

  • Orientation Matters: Vaastu emphasizes the direction your home faces and the placement of rooms. For example, it recommends that bedrooms face southwest for restful sleep and that kitchens face southeast to align with the fire element.

  • Balancing the Elements: Incorporating the right materials, colours, and designs ensures that all five elements are balanced in your home.

Balancing the Elements in a Home

Earth (Prithvi)

Represents stability, grounding, and strength.

  • Placement: South and southwest zones.

  • Materials: Use heavy and natural materials like stone, marble, clay tiles, or wood for flooring and furniture in these areas.

  • Colours: Earthy tones like brown, beige, and sand shades.

  • Design Tips:

    • Place heavy furniture like beds, wardrobes, and safes in the southwest for grounding energy.

    • Place plants in the southwest as they absorb toxins and help clean our environment.

Water (Jal)

Represents clarity, calmness, and flow.

  • Placement: North and northeast zones.

  • Materials: Incorporate glass, mirrors, fountains, or aquariums in these areas.

  • Colours: Shades of blue, aqua, and black.

  • Design Tips:

    • Position water features like a fountain or small pond in the northeast corner of your home or garden.

    • Keep drinking water storage or purifiers in the northeast direction of the kitchen.

    • Use low flow water restrictors to conserve our precious water supply.

Fire (Agni)

Represents energy, power, and transformation.

  • Placement: Southeast and occasionally south zones.

  • Materials: Metals, fire-resistant surfaces, and kitchen appliances like stoves and ovens.

  • Colours: Warm colours like red, orange, and pink.

  • Design Tips:

    • The kitchen should ideally be in the southeast corner of the house. Position stoves and gas ranges in the southeast section of the kitchen.

    • Avoid placing mirrors in the southeast zone, as they amplify fire energy.

    • Use low wattage lighting to conserve energy.

Air (Vayu)

Represents movement, growth, and freshness.

  • Placement: Northwest zone.

  • Materials: Light materials like fabric, wind chimes, and soft furnishings.

  • Colours: White, light blue, or pastel shades.

  • Design Tips:

    • Place windows, ventilators, or exhaust fans in the northwest to ensure proper airflow and make sure to clean out regularly for proper air flow

    • Incorporate wind chimes or potted plants with flowing foliage to symbolize movement.

    • Open windows, even for a few minutes each morning, to balance the air element in the northwest.

Space (Aakash)

Represents openness, expansion, and freedom.

  • Placement: The centre of the home.

  • Materials: Open spaces, glass partitions, and minimalistic furniture arrangements.

  • Colours: Light shades like white, cream, or pastel hues to create a sense of openness.

  • Design Tips:

    • Keep the centre of your home uncluttered, as this is the Brahmasthan (sacred energy centre).

    • Use skylights or large windows to bring in natural light, symbolizing openness.

The Role of Sun Path in Vaastu Shastra

The principles of Vastu directions are influenced by the Sun's position relative to a specific location on Earth. These directions vary depending on the Sun's path at different coordinates. In the northern hemisphere, such as in India, the Sun moves from east to south before setting in the west. In contrast, in southern hemisphere countries like Australia, the Sun moves from east to north and sets in the west.

This difference means that in the northern hemisphere, the Sun primarily illuminates the south side of a house, while in the southern hemisphere, it shines directly on the north side. As a result, the south side in Indian Vaastu Shastra corresponds to the north side in southern hemisphere countries. However, the significance of the East and West directions remains consistent in both hemispheres according to Vaastu Shastra.

Adapting Vaastu Shastra to Australian Homes

In Australia, where the Sun predominantly shines on the north-facing side of homes, specific Vaastu adjustments are essential to maximize harmony:

  • Main Entrance Placement: While Indian Vaastu emphasizes a north or east-facing entrance, in Australia, this can align with local climate considerations by choosing a shaded orientation or designing extended awnings to balance energy flow.

  • Maximizing North-Facing Spaces: Since the north side receives the most sunlight, living areas, home offices, and open spaces are best positioned here to take advantage of natural light and warmth.

  • Bedrooms in the South: The south-facing direction in Australia is calmer and receives less direct sunlight, making it ideal for restful bedroom placements.

  • Kitchen Orientation: The Southeast remains ideal for the kitchen, aligning with the fire element, but proper ventilation and light access should be considered due to the Australian climate.

  • Outdoor Spaces: Backyards or open recreational areas can be placed to the east or north, ensuring morning sunlight and positive energy for gatherings.

Detailed Room Placement for Australian Homes

To ensure your Australian home adheres to Vaastu principles, here's a breakdown of room placements:

  • Living Room: North or east-facing for positivity and natural light.

  • Dining Room: Ideally in the west to enhance family bonding and digestion.

  • Study Area: Northeast placement for focus and concentration.

  • Storage: Southwest corners are ideal for heavy items or storage, symbolizing stability.

  • Staircases: Should spiral clockwise for optimal energy movement.

  • Puja Room: If you include a prayer or meditation space, place it in the northeast for spiritual growth.

Common Misconceptions About Vaastu in Australia

Some homeowners may believe that Vaastu Shastra cannot be adapted outside of India. However, with proper understanding of directional principles and the Sun’s path, it’s entirely possible to incorporate Vaastu into any Australian home.

Another misconception is that only traditional homes can follow Vaastu Shastra. In reality, modern designs, including open-plan layouts and minimalist homes, can integrate Vaastu principles seamlessly without compromising style or functionality.
